Inspired by the 'Spong Man' Anglo Saxon cremation urn lid seen at the British Library this year from Norwich Castle Museum. It is one of very few three-dimensional representations of humanoid figures from the entire Anglo-Saxon period and as a figure contemplating mortality is a very interesting artefact. This study explores this idea of contemplation.
